  1. Saw Judas and the Black Messiah today. Two other people in the cinema. Maybe that’s a sign of the current state of cinema in the age of COVID, or maybe a lack of interest in 1960s US Black politics in 2021 Australia. Probably a bit of both.

    The film had a really authentic feel – although that did not help in understanding all the dialogue. Rapid fire conversation in 1960s hip Black language is pretty hard to follow to an older white Australian like me.

    The story was interesting, particularly as it is based on real events. Fred Hampton’s revolutionary rhetoric seems almost archaic now. Just how he intended to carry out a proletarian revolution in Nixon’s America remained unclear. Like a lot of radical politics, it was really just fantasy.

    It reminded me of The Trial of the Chicago 7 [2020], mainly due to the Bobby Seale link. I thought this was a much better film.
